I think it's less a trope than "we have to show the audience that it really is okay to have a Doctor who's over 45, and this is the only character we can use." It felt as pasted-on as Martha's stupid crush, but added for better reason (even if I think it would have been better to proceed as if fandom hadn't had a giant strop over something stupid).
