Well, first I don't have any set layout. I do each from scratch, since size and style vary. Put generally, I do these with Photoshop, using layers and feather cutting the edges of the area of the image I want.

I'm not sure what programs you have at your fingertips at the moment. I know you said that GIMP wasn't working well for you. Does that have layer capabilities? What other programs do you have available either at home or on campus? Once I know that I can email/message you some general directions. :)

btw, how are those drabbles coming? I'm just curious to know if you need anymore inspirational carrots. :D

Mostly I don't understanding the coding side of it. Or what buttons you're supposed to press on lj to even get to the customization stage. Yes, I know I'm hopeless.

Ah, the drabbles. The prompt about Six getting locked out of his TARDIS has really bit me. You might even get full-scale fic out of that. I've never really written Six before, so it should be interesting...

In terms of livejournal customizations that not too hard. There's few specific livejournal pages that talk about it and even take you through some of the general steps. Let me bring those up and then, I'll message or email you with them and a few simple directions. ;)
