Season's Greetings!
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I wish you all a festive day full of joy and friends and family!
So far I have slept-in (hurrah for sleep!), sent Christmas texts or phone calls to most friends and family members, played with the kitty (Tuck got a stuffed fish filled wtih catnip and has been proudly carrying it around all morning), and read so much fic.
Later, there will be a Christmas luncheon and the Doctor Who Christmas Special. I'm checking in on pets for various people over the holidays, and one of these people, 1. has cable, and 2. explicitly told me it was okay to invite people over to their house to watch the Who. Hurrah!
And the fic:
I already said that Christmas came early this year (on Gauda Prime Day to be precise) when
aralias openned up her marvellous Non B/A Christmas Collection. I like all of the stories she wrote so much, and they are all so different, that I can't even begin to pick out favourites. The fics all have really cracky premises (Gan gets super glued to Orac; Avon pretends to be Carnell; Avon, Dayna, and Tarrant all get drunk together...) and are as funny as you would expect, but also still have a harder, bittersweet B7 edge lurking beneath the surface. Great stuff!
(I'm writing all of the above with the realization that there are probably very few people on my flist who don't know this collection exists/have a story specifically gifted to them in it, but if you didn't know it existed and you're into Blake's, go check it out!)
Public_Call:
This is reaching back a bit further, but I keep re-reading it. On Dec. 10 for the
public_call ficathon I got a brilliant fic about Ian and Clara having a heart-to-heart over a cup of tea. It's full of Classic references, emotions, and philosophy, and it gives to most beautiful closure to series 8. You can read it here: Memento Mori sed Memento Vivere.
At some point over the next few weeks I've got to get caught up on the rest of the fic written for that fest. I've only read about a third so-far, but all of what I have read has been very good indeed!
Yuletide:
This was my first year participating. The pre-reveals bit was a bit of a mixed bag of stress and hair-pulling, but the present-openning bit has been marvellous! I'm kind of gob-struck that I appear to have received four full-sized fics, plus a thus-far unrevealled madness fic (which, if I'm shaking it right, is going to be Avon/Servalan. So excited!). All but one of my asked-for fandoms were represented! I feel so very giddy and full incoherent gratitude.
One fic is clearly a friend trolling me. It made me laugh a lot though. I'm not reccing it, because it makes zero sense and I don't think it's supposed to, but I think it's awesome.
The other fics are:
Papertrail, A wonderfully interconnected Sapphire and Steel fic. It has Sapphire, Steel, and Silver. It has mystery! It has period settings! It has Steel bumping into display cases at a museum after dark!
Web of Gold, A Kamen Rider OOOs fix-it fic for the finale which used the prompt I was most hoping for. There's perfect characterisation, lush descriptions, humour, a touch of angst, and it's also really sexy despite being a gen fic.
and
Psychopath, A Blake's 7 B/A fic. The author has some different head canon for Blake than I do, but there's also some fun Avon & Vila dialogue and a bit of Avon/Cally at the end. And the author also left a note saying how much fun they had re-visiting the show, which is always nice to hear, because more people in fandom = more fic for all!
---
There were also a bunch of fics written in my requested fandoms for other people which I've been going through. There's a 30k+ Sapphire and Steel assignment!fic with OC Operators and a creepy, convoluted plot! I haven't finished it yet, but what I've read so far is amazing.
---
And, so far, everything that I've written has received nice comments. So, while I'm still fairly certain that the last-minute PH I picked up is a bit awful, the recipient is at least being very gracious about it.
