I can't actually think of any of answer they could've given that I would've accepted so whole-heartedly. I had a feeling they might do this kind of fake-out, but I was also at the same time concerned that they'd go over the top and try to make the Doctor one of the Elder Gods out of lovecraft or something (who knows?) but I am very much relived at how things actually did pan out, and from the other responses I've seen I think that most of fandom breathed a sigh of relief at that explanation. Some people might think it was a cop-out, but honestly, what else could they have done?

(Now, watch me eat my words on all of this when the 50th rolls around and the Doctor's original name is revealed to be King Twiddle Thumbs or something equally daft)
