clocketpatch: A small, innocent-looking red alarm clock, stuck forever at 10 to 7. (CLOCKETPATCH!)

Merry Christmas all!

I've just spent the eve of it making penguin nails, cleaning the house, writing fic, and watching old British SciFi. Since I know at least one person of the flist who will probably get quite a bit of glee out of there being a reaction post to this... here you are [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook. You are a dangerous dealer of vintage fandom, you know that, right?

Star Wars titles?

All of these ticking clocks are making me think of that bit in Girl in the Fire place when Ten talks about the sound of ticking, "One clock you can ignore, but the sound of two clocks ticking? You might start to wonder if you're really alone."

I think this kid, sitting at the kitchen table doing homework, is wondering.

It is really amazing how completely creepy disembodied children's voices and multiple ticking clocks can be.

Okay, the clocks have stopped ticking and that is somehow more creepy. This isn't going to be one of those show where things jump out from corners, is it? The disembodied voices have also stopped, and there's a creepy buzzing.

STARS! And some very retro graphics. Weird grid patterns, a bizarre floating space helmet, and some glowy dots.

I'm glad of the information about this show I've managed to glean from lost_spook, because I'd be highly confused by all of these glow-y dots otherwise.

This is a very resourceful kid; going to ring the police and comforting his younger sister.

Ah, I think these would be the titular characters, and after approximately two seconds I'm understanding why lost_spook likes these two. They're both very, "Yep, we know everything and we're going to be very oblique and cryptic about it."

Oh, they're telepathic, that's cool. "There is a corridor, and the corridor is time, it surrounds all things and it runs through all things." And Steel is just glaring at her through the explanation.

Is it odd that I'm jealous of the little girl (Helen)'s night gown? It looks lovely and warm. I want one.

Steel is creepily ordering children to sit and kneel.

I don't have the slightest clue what is happening but it is creepy beyond all get out.

"Take it downstairs, and burn it." Well, that's an unexpected moment of UST for a children's drama.

Steel is stalking in and Sapphire is all, "I wasn't doing anything" *shimmers back into old outfit* and now Steel will terrify the children.

Is there fic where Cally and Avon team up with Sapphire and Steel? Because there should be. And, depending on how much of this I end up watching… I might be the one to write it.

I find myself desperately hoping that Sapphire's blue eyes are being done with an overlay animation, because if they're 1970s contacts then I feel quite sorry for her.

"I might well make you spend the next few hours climbing through the window not getting anywhere." <- creepy much?

"Imagine a rubber ball. Imagine a rubber ball bouncing." Does she always speak in repetitive metaphors?

I enjoy their snarky telepathy.

It is straight-up strange for the characters to say things like, "this was made in the 1930s, therefore it is 40 years old." I mean, that logically makes sense given the (visually obvious) age of the show, but, it's still a bit strange to hear. 1930 was as close to the people making this show as 1970 is me watching today.

While I'm sympathetic to these poor kids whose parents have been abducted by time monsters, I really don't get why S&S haven't locked them in a closet yet.

That flashlight following them along the carpet is unexpectedly terrifying.

"Don't you know your history?"

"I know mine, yes."

Sapphire has vanished and Steel is being all intense.

I'm kind of hoping that Steel is going to jump into the icebox now… hmm, no such luck.

Aw, the flashlight-on-the-carpet has found a friend.

Apparently he did jump into the icebox off-screen.

Now I'm dreadfully curious about the transuranics.

 …

That was one hour and sixteen minutes. Not all of it, but over half and now it is sleeping time. The rest will be saved for another night.

Oh, yes. And that S&S is the ultimate in dangerous crack. :-D

And mentioning the age of things is usual in S&S because it's important to them. And, yep, Joanna Lumley is wearing contacts for the blue. (If you're really squeamish, I won't tell you bout what she had to put up with the one time they made her eyes go black... o_0)

And, aha, yes, I love Elements and their weirdness, but it is, hands down, Silver I adore, and then feel terribly guilty because Sapphire and Steel are obviously better, but... Silver!

(S&S was intended as a children's show, but they changed their minds and altered the script, but that's why A1 has two pov child characters.)

eee.

:-D

I was excited enough by this post to comment to you while I'm Not Here (i.e. on my Mum's laptop), so hurrah!

Also, I'm sorry about the Silver hype; that is bad. I believe I saw Assignment Six when I was very very small. I have indelible fear of Transient Beings and love of Silver (being the only child-ccessible thing in it). So, I'm not rational on the subject. It also explains why I was always a bit frustrated with David Collings for never being allowed to be quite... Silver, as it turns out.

And, LOL, fic! I think I waited till halfway through A3 when I was struck all aheap by an inhuman OT3. Mind, I was too ill to be writing at all, but...

Enjoy the rest! It's very weird and can be slow going, but it is worth it for the strangest bit of Tv ever made and having your brain turned inside out while gazing at Joanna Lumley.

ETA: I don't really make fandoms for old things - I took about 3 years before I managed to post sensibly about B7. I just made encouraging noises when people said they were interested. S&S I did push to everyone and anyone who would listen, including my parents, but S&S is like that.

Oops, and meant to say - half an episode's canon is probably sufficient, really. It's not as if we ever get much more in the way of explanation... ;-D

I'm home now! I hope your trip is okay. *hugs* (And, of course, will look forward to any further S&S thoughts you may have at some point.)

And now that I'm home and can type things properly...

B7/S&S fic: Irregularity (I'm pretty sure there were no S&S spoilers in it - there's only really one thing that ever counts as an S&S spoiler in fic - but as it will be post that point in canon, there may have been. It's AU for B7.

There are quite a few B7/S&S fics - I'll need to check my recs post and my bookmarks properly for you.

They're both very, "Yep, we know everything and we're going to be very oblique and cryptic about it."

*nods*

"Imagine a rubber ball. Imagine a rubber ball bouncing." Does she always speak in repetitive metaphors?

Quite a lot, though not necessarily in metaphors. It's why it's such fun to write S&S and why I was driven into the present tense to do it. Elements, here in the now, reading everything's histories and ages and so on...
