It's a weird one, but I like the dichotomy of it. Avon is a human who tries to act/is seen by his peers as being machine-like. Orac is a machine with human-like moods and quibbles. Both of them are selfish, egotistic, manipulative, and dangerous. And both of them have lost someone they care about (Orac doesn't say outright that he misses or cares about Ensor, but production reasons aside, I think that he started using his creator's voice is something that can be fannically expanded on about to no end).
I also quite like how Avon tends to lean on Orac throughout the series. Maybe this happens more in my mind than in the actual show, but I didn't have any trouble finding screencaps. I think it's probably at least as common as Avon *accidentally* falling on top of Blake.
They're co-dependant, unhealthy, and bitchy with each other (and the fact that Orac can be silenced by removing his key would be incredibly creepy if it weren't abundantly obvious that Orac doesn't care in the slightest and just gets back to whatever he was researching on before the obnoxious human interruption). There's also that scene where Orac tells Avon that he loves him, and Avon's reaction looks like this:

Orac is given a human body. In fact, he is given a clone of Avon's body, and much amazing characterization ensues.
It strikes me that these are both rather romantic fics. Okay, I'll admit that I'll ship this either way. I'm just claiming non-compatible hardware in order to use this meme slot to blather about Avon/Orac and how they are amazing. Oh, wait, no.
Well, you know I won't be arguing. I love the way you describe it here though - Avon wanting to be a machine and Orac being a machine but not necessarily behaving like a machine. And yeah, Orac's total chillness at being all "Yeah, just take my key out, I'm not even interested." And the scenes between them in Horizon are just perfect.
Thank you for reccing my fic - I really am so glad you liked it that much. And one day, I will totally add more to that tag because dammit, Avon and Orac are just so interesting.
