The graphic novel in question is Y: The Last Man. I'd give the Wikipedia link, but I appreciated the story so much that I wouldn't want any potential readers to accidentally spoil themselves (while I was reading it I was very frustrated with the guy I was borrowing it from's reluctance to give any spoilers, but I was happy about his resolve on that front by the end.)

Well. I say happy.

The ending (without spoilers), was tragic, poetic, realistic, hopeful-when-you-think-about-it, and makes me want to read the whole series over. The series itself follows the adventures of Yorick Brown, a 20-something unemployed college student and his pet monkey. They are, for reasons unknown to themselves, the only survivors of a plague that has killed every male mammal on the planet. It's really, really, really good and I want to recommend it to anyone on the Flist looking for a cool read that's a bit off the beaten track.

(also, browsing around online shows that it might be turning into a movie next year)

I got up to volume 6 or thereabouts I think, in the trade paperbacks. I suppose I should pick it up again. I did like it while I was reading it.

I have heard of this, although never read it, and your recommendation is making me want to. Another one to go on the "to read...someday" list, then. ;)

I've read the first volume (is that what they call it?) I both liked it and had some issues with it. Said issues would require some wordiness, if you don't mind. :P
