Lands of Fiction

Writen for the crossover meme and [profile] gm_andy  who requested Frodo and Nine. Watch out for the angst (I swear, I will fulfil one of these meme requests without diving into angst land)

Hope for the Future

For [livejournal.com profile] abbyromana  and [livejournal.com profile] greatbriton  who both requested Ian and Giles for the multifandom conversation meme. I'll get around to doing the others eventually I suppose. Fic writing is being greatly curtailled by life at the moment, and I'm wondering if I'm going to have to drop some things *prods at finishathon commitment* After spending the whole day at work copy-pasting spread sheets my enthusiasm for doing anything else likes to crawl into a corner and die. However, I've been wanting to write this fic for a long time. It's set circa 1966 and, alas, I haven't watched any One lately so my Ian characterization is mostly in name only, but I hope you enjoy anyways and forgive me the angst.

Here be fic! )

Just pump it straight into my veins...

I think I'm addicted to memes, and I also have serious difficultly in saying no to memes which pop up on my Flist, especially memes of a writerly persuasion, such as this little number I picked up from [livejournal.com profile] jjpor :

Give me two characters from different fandoms you know I'm familiar with, and I'll give you a dialogue happening between the two of them. Without justifying how the crossover would work, how their worlds clashed or how they could even meet each other. Just a silly crossover conversation with no backstory, for fun.

Fandoms I'm familiar with, well, by familiar I mean 'seen enough to be somewhat comfortable writing in':

*Doctor Who and its various spin-offs, New, Classic, Audio, the SJAs etc. (I could probably write Torchwood at a stretch, but, erm, probably not your best bet if you're looking for stellar characterization)
*Firefly
*Buffy (though only up to s.5)
*Lord of the Rings
*Dead Like Me
*Redwall (don't judge me)
*Narnia
*Dr. Horrible
*Repo! The Genetic Opera
*The Lion King (I'm not sure if I'm familar with the fandom, but I do like the movie, though why this cross-over would come up...?)
*Magic School Bus (Ditto with the Lion King)

I could probably do CSI: NY at a stretch. Actually, I could probably do Animorphs as well if you REALLY wanted to stretch it, but I haven't read those in ages.

Okay Flisters, help the useless uninformed person

What would be a good antivirus program for me to download? Preferably free, but I'm willing to pay (better that then get my computer killed). I'd been using AVG free, but they've cut the update support and I've been dead in the water for a few months, and now my laptops doing suspicious slow running thing and I'm just ever so slightly concerned.

Memes and bunnies and bedtimes ignored... oh my!

So, having replied to fic-y meme posted by [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia , I now must proliferate the meme across my own journal for that is how these things work, yes? (okay, okay, I know how memes work, I'm also tired and slightly deranged at the moment, bare with)

ANYWAYS:

The first ten people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me. In return, requesters should post this in their journal, offering in return fanworks of the kind they enjoy doing. Fic? Icons? Meta?

actually, I'm fine making icons as well as drabbles, even though I'm admittedly not that great at it. It's amusing, yes, yes it is. Also, drabbles might turn into fic, beware. I shouldn't be doing this really, there are other fics on the stove already, boiling away -

but, done is done, so request away. I think you already know my fandom of choice.

Edit: There are still FIVE slots left.

Hey Hex-y!

So, I've finally contributed money to that great and noble company which we call Big Finish. I got two audios: Night Thoughts (which I didn't like much over-all, but had some great character moments) and Arrangements for War (which I liked quite a bit, except for the ending which made me scratch my head a bit; I couldn't figure out why the Doctor was willing to allow all of the collateral damage that the love story brought about; and why he seemed relatively unconcerned by said collateral, but meh. Was a good story and good character moments). I highly recommend.

Anyway, I'm back at work on my Seven-Ace-Hex jungle thriller thing, though I should really, really, REALLY be working on my WIPs (I did plug in a new 2000 words for Forever Tomorrow though, I'm just trying to get the conclusion sorted... I knew where I was going with that story, and then it all just sort of got away from me).

What I want to know is, do any of you think there'd be an audience for a story which contains: a spot-light stealing OC who swears a lot, a Big Finish character (Hex), an-absent-for-most-of-the-fic Doctor (Seven), a-half-dead-for-quite-a-bit companion (Ace),  and a combination of near-future politics (and by near I mean, fifty years hence, and in the DW universe), random historical stuff, archaeology, and aliens? And timey-wimey, lots of timey-wimey... It's also looking to be quite long, if I ever get it done that is. I've got around 6000 words and I'm just finishing up the second chapter. So, probably a doosey.

Also, is anyone familiar enough with Seven, Ace, and Hex to be willing to beta for them? I'm thinking this will be a relatively early on adventure to make up for the fact that I haven't heard most of their audios, but I'm afraid I'm getting the dialogue wrong and maybe contradicting established characterisation?

Mostly I'm just concerned people aren't going to stand for reading half a chapter of my OC stamping around swearing.

random late night fanart

DbyA friends have probably already seen this madness.

I'm not usually one for drawing fanart... well, aside from that picture of Three and those random Legolass portraits I did and lost years ago...

anyway, last night I was bored and felt the random urge to doodle, so, um, yeah. I didn't have any references while drawing so it turned into a kind of memory cartoon-y thing.

And then tonight I felt the random urge to scan the things and try to colour them. Anyway, 'nough said:

Song Meme

I don't remember where I picked this up, but I found it, completed, in my back folders when rummaging through my documents. The rules are: take a band which you like, each answer must be a song by that band. I choose Great Big Sea, because they are awesome and I love them.

Pinched from [livejournal.com profile] jjpor

Open up your "Manage Stories" page on Teaspoon and unfold all the chapters. For the purposes of this meme, disregard first chapters of multichapter fics. [Teaspoon counts any hits on the TOC as a hit on the first chapter.]

28 Random Icons!

because I did work at my homework, for a little bit; put the finishing touches on my essay; did some demo runs of my presentation -
so to celebrate I'm posting these random icons!

Want, Take, Have. Why yes, you can use them as blanks. #1 is too big for lj apparently (dammit), but if any of you clever people know how to shrink things down feel welcome to it.

Hmm...

Once again it becomes obvious that the amount of time I spend on the interwebs being pointless is tied in direct correlation to the amount of actual work which I must get done. Really, I must kick this procrastination problem before it gets me into serious donkey shit (if it hasn't already) but... *sighs*

Anyway, I suppose I ought to really go work on my presentation -
and how does it make sense that I'm procrastinating when I am really interested in my topic and enjoy researching it? Khipu! Khipu! The knot language of the Andes, was it an actual writing system or merely a means of recording numeric data?

Now, before I run off...

According to my procrastination quizzes I am... )

which should be finished?

Which one of these bunnies/ WIPs would you really, really like to see finished? Because the winner will be finished by the end of May. Hopefully. I've been assured that terrible, awful, pointy-pokey-stick and rotten waffles type things might happen to me if I don't finish... anyway, vote! also, html is ebil and should be taken out back and put out of its misery. One itty-bitty little cut link should NOT take me 20 minutes to get right... head!desk

*sniffs* does something smell a bit... skunky...? *raises hand* "it's probably me."

So, I saw Watchmen last night (or rather, was dragged from my homework by my room mates to see Watchmen… not that I was entirely unwilling). It was good. No, scratch that; it was VERY good; quite possibly one of the best movies I’ve ever seen –

Weird Weather

You can tell that I'm procrastinating, because my level of procrastination goes in direct ratio with the number of pointless lj posts I make in one day, but really, the weather right now is odd. According to various weather sites it is -1C and maybe I'm just warm-blooded, but it seems far warmer to me than that, because I was walking around quite comfortably in a t-shirt and bare feet a few moments ago (well... maybe not *comfortably* I realised that there was broken glass from my party animal neighbours at some point and tip-toed back inside for shoes; but I wasn't cold is the point)

Now the weirdness: there is freezing rain. Heavy freezing rain.

Walking about, feeling warm, in a t-shirt while little pellets of ice drop onto your head is a most surreal feeling.

I've had some experience with freezing rain: I lived though the great ice storm of '98, which was basically an extended holiday for ten year old me (I wasn't in a badly affected region and didn't end up in a shelter, though I know people who did). I hate freezing rain when I need to travel, or when it knocks out the power, but I love the tinkling sound it makes, skittering against my window glass, and its beauty when it collects on tree branches like a glimmering, glassy cocoon. I love it when the sun rises, or sets, and the light catches through all of those crystals and turns them golden. And, I've decided, I also love the feeling of walking barefoot on a warm evening and having little droplets on it melt on my cheeks.

KITTIES!

I keep mentioning them, so I figured I'd give a nice reference picture. From left to right they are: Shelfish, Obo (who looks a mite possessed for some reason), and Pebbles. This is a rare photo containing all three. Usually Shelfish tries to kill Pebbles while Obo rolls his eyes (in a metaphorical cat way) and walks away. In fact, that is what happened almost immediately after this picture was taken.

Go figure.

Walk Through the Dust

So, I present you with... fic! Very un-beta'd half-edited fic which needs an awful lot of clean up before it goes public, but who knows how long that will take. It started as a series of drabbles, but I kind of abandoned that format somewhere towards the end. It's Romana in E-Space, and an attempt at figuring out her change in demeanor towards the Doctor during the audio adventures (not the Gallifrey audios, since I haven't heard those, but just the regular line) as opposed to during the show, and also a bit of Time War speculation.

Length: 990 words
Rating: PG, I guess, for some implied stuff

EDITED: the fic has now been re-writ, and edited, and stuff. Yay!

Is it just me or...?

As I continue not to sleep, I wanted to take this time to ask a question that has been bugging me for some time: does Matt Smith not bear an uncanny resemblance to a young Martin Clunes? Because one of my first thoughts on seeing him... after the requisit "The HAIR! the HAIR" and the "face!palm, well... THIS should appeal to Twilight fans; a vampire in the TARDIS" was "My, doesn't he look like that really effeminant dude from Snake Dance?"

I've got a nice little picture hidden below the cut (for those friends of mine who are bravely avoiding spoilers, somehow) that, thanks to the marvels of paint, shows Clunes and Smith together. On a final note, I heard somewhere that Clunes was actually short-listed to BE 11 at some point, but something fell through last minute. I don't know the truth of that story, but... O.o
