clocketpatch: A small, innocent-looking red alarm clock, stuck forever at 10 to 7. (Rory and Amy complex and scary)
More fic. Approx. 1300 words of it. Amy falls deeper down the rabbit hole and Brian asks a very relevant question.

A bit more fic. I feel weird about posting fic set in New York after everything that's happened there in the past few weeks. I do hope that all of my Flisters in that area are okay. I spent most of October researching and writing this stuff and it was pretty traumatizing to see places I'd been looking at pictures of suddenly end up in the middle of a disaster zone. I can't imagine how much worse it must be for those people who actually live there.

Chapter two, some 2880 words, under here )
clocketpatch: A small, innocent-looking red alarm clock, stuck forever at 10 to 7. (Brig why yes I am AWESOME)
I've got a bit of a scrambled up belief system, but the multi-verse as presented by Discworld suits me well. The idea that there is a multi-verse and that anything CAN happen, but not everything DOES happen, because we make the choice between can and does. I believe that there is a place somewhere where all of the ideas and possibilities gather and sleep and give out inspiration to anyone who bothers to listen. And I believe that belief itself can sometimes make the unreal real.

Which is all just prologue to me noticing last night that Night Watch by Terry Pratchett and Life on Mars share several spooky plot similarities, and wouldn't it be fun to have Sam Vimes and Sam Tyler meet up on the beat one night and have a chat?

The Rules of The Internet tell me that this must exist somewhere, because the Internet is the multi-verse personified. So... does anyone know of the existence of such a fic?

(and bonus points if the Brig is involved.)

This is the first chapter of my contribution to the Eleven_Romana ficathon. I feel like I'm fudging it a bit because Romana doesn't actually appear in this chapter (or for several of the ones that follow, but she does appear, I assure you). But I'm late enough already and want to make sure I post something before the month passes. The rest will probably arrive via the Teaspoon, but I didn't know how long the moderation process would take. The month is, after all, near its close.

It's all unbeta'd. If you see any mistakes please don't hesitate to let me know. The Arrival dates are not a mistake. I'm just ignoring the PS. And if you have a better title idea I'd be happy to hear it since I'm rubbish with titles.

I'll leave you all to do your own reading and draw your own conclusions, but in a nutshell:

When it's digital product I understand stripping the right of resale. It doesn't mean I like it, but it makes sense given that you can essentially make unlimited copies.

But when that logic jumps onto physical objects like clothing, phones, books and CDs it stops being logic. I do not have a magic replicator. I cannot clone my possessions. However, I do occasionally accumulate too many possessions and, rather than throw them out, I like to donate stuff I don't use anymore to charity, give it to friends, or even sell it. Depending on the court decision here we all might end up living in a world where the only legal thing you'll be able to do with stuff you don't want anymore is put it in the trash. Now, this would only apply to things which were made outside of the United States, but since we live in a global economy putting this into practice means that you wouldn't be able to resell anything - including cars and houses - without getting permission from people who probably have a vested interest in not giving you permission.

And just like that, libraries, Ebay, and giving away Christmas presents all may become illegal. < at least this is how I'm interpreting the potential end results. I have no legal background and, to be totally honest, I've only really been skim reading. This is why I invite you all to read and draw your own conclusions because mine may well be wrong.

Luckily I'm not American so I can still recycle if this goes through (hurrah!). Unluckily my government has a rather monkey-see, monkey-do approach to whatever America does. Also America has a tendency to try and enforce its copy-right laws across international boundaries: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2087574/Richard-ODwyer-extradition-A-naive-British-student-facing-10-years-chains.html

So, Flisters who live in the USA, if you would be kind enough to tell your government that you think this is a stupid idea I would be much obliged.

Flisters who don't live in the USA, feel free to pass the message on and to tell your own governments not to monkey-see, monkey-do if this comes to pass

Here's their next move: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States.

And CISPA would provide a victory for content owners who were shell-shocked by the unprecedented outpouring of activism in opposition to SOPA and Internet censorship.

The House of Representatives is planning to take up CISPA later this month. Click here to ask your lawmakers to oppose it.

SOPA was pushed as a remedy to the supposed economic threat of online piracy -- but economic fear-mongering didn't quite do the trick.

So those concerned about copyright are engaging in sleight of hand, appending their legislation to a bill that most Americans will assume is about keeping them safe from bad guys.

This so-called cyber security bill aims to prevent theft of "government information" and "intellectual property" and could let ISPs block your access to websites -- or the whole Internet.

Don't let them push this back-door SOPA. Click here to demand that your lawmakers oppose CISPA.

CISPA also encourages companies to share information about you with the government and other corporations.

That data could then be used for just about anything -- from prosecuting crimes to ad placements.

And perhaps worst of all, CISPA supercedes all other online privacy protections.

Please click here to urge your lawmakers to oppose CISPA when it comes up for a vote this month.

Thanks for fighting for the Internet.

Good Cause

clocketpatch: A small, innocent-looking red alarm clock, stuck forever at 10 to 7. (Default)
I have been asked to spread the word about a 4 year old male orange tabby cat in North Bay Ontario who is looking for a good home. His owner can no longer keep him due to territorial issues with another cat. If any Flisters are looking for a cat and willing to make a bit of a drive for it (I don't think I've got any one on here in Northern Ontario?) I'd be happy to forward you the owner's contact details.

If you know any one who might be interested please let me know. It's probably a long shot since unwanted cats are, sadly, very common. I don't know the cat in question so I can't tell you what they're like personality-wise, but after losing Obo I want to do the best I can to give this kitty some publicity.

Pebbles came home a few minutes ago. The plan had been to keep her in my room to prevent her from fighting with the other cats and give her a nice safe place to rest quietly... Her response was to tear out of my room at the soonest opportunity and run around the house like a mad thing making me go white thinking she was going to tear out her stitches. Then we did the whole: "you will take this pill it is good for you" "No-no-no-no I will not take this pill!" "Yes you will! Haha! Got it in! ...oh wait, you spit it out and covered it with your paw."

The vet showed us a picture of her uterus compared with a normal cat's. Holy shit. To give some perspective - she weighed nearly nine pounds going in and only seven pounds coming out. Apparently the infection was completely contained which was why it didn't show up on blood work and wasn't bothering her, but if her spay had been a few days later it could have ruptured and killed her. My mother, having seen the picture, is determined to get the other cat fixed while I'm gone.

Little miracle kitty is now sitting under her favourite chair glaring at me. Thanks for giving her good thoughts.

I feel like an absolute idiot. The highest class of idiot. I've been crying all day and feeling generally miserable, which I honestly deserve. But maybe something can be salvaged from this if I can information share and prevent this from happening to other people.

Please don't let this happen to your kitties )

Bottom line: get your pets fixed.

Also, please give good thoughts to Pebbles.

I got an excellent fic rec from [livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10  the other day, and it made me think that it's been awhile since I last updated my Eleven fic list. Now, this isn't an exhaustive collection since I'm doing this off the cuff of my memory and I'm probably forgetting loads, but here's 7 Eleven recs and a link to one of my favourite fic comms for your reading pleasure. The original Eleven rec list is here.

If there's anything that you don't see on either list which you think deserves a shout out please do let me know in the comments. I loves a good Eleven fic and I haven't really had much time to keep on top of them this past year.

Lots of fic )
clocketpatch: A small, innocent-looking red alarm clock, stuck forever at 10 to 7. (Sarah Jane and the Brig)
After a great evening out I came home and went to check the DbyA for new posts/spam/unwhited spoilers. People had left messages in the C-box. I sort of skimmed them but my eyes caught out the words "will miss the SJA" and all I could think was: "Damn! It's been cancelled? But I loved that show! I love Clyde/Rani and Sarah-Jane and K-9/Mr. Smith"

If only.

It's not really sticking yet. Reading various posts, I think it's a big shock to everyone in fandom. No one knew she was sick. She always looked so young. All I can think now is that 63 is my mum's age, which I generally forget because she looks so young too. My sympathies and prayers are going out to Lis Sladen's friends and family tonight.

Good bye Sarah-Jane, we won't forget you.

You've probably already heard, but LJ's recent DoS attacks are apparently being perpetuated by the Russian government in order to force anti-corruption bloggers onto other websites where they can be more easily shut down.

I should also mention that there was a key-logger on lj that tried getting past my Firewall just shortly before all of this began, so do be making sure you've got anti-virus/a good firewall/adBlock people. Since the aim of these attacks seems to be shutting to site off permanently, copying your journal to somewhere like DW is probably a good idea. I've got one invite if anyone wants it.

All that said... this makes me fonder of LJ then I've been since the whole Facebook debacle. In the interest of freedom of speech (and, let's not lie, my own laziness), I'm not migrating at the moment.

I've apparently also succumbed to the March Madness bug. I'm not sure where poor Eleven's going to dig up 200-odd votes in the next 16 hours (I did that math right? right?) but I'm hopeful none the less... okay, not going to lie, I just think it would be fun to have Eleven win in 2011. I've never participated in this thing before or even been aware of its existence, but baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Sheep.

VOTE FOR ELEVEN

And as a side note, I won't be displeased if the competitor wins. I've only seen a handful of episodes of his show, but it's not bad.

In a famously divided fandom, his was the character everyone loved. Peace to his friends and family.

RIP Nicholas Courtney, thank you for bringing smiles to so many. For being a legend.
